If you’ve seen more families with children in skid row, you’re right. This year the BID has tracked a steady flow of migrant families onto our sidewalks. The BID reached out to Mayor Karen Bass for help. The Mayor is appealing to the federal government for funding to house these families.

On May 5, Mayor Bass invited BID Executive Director Estela Lopez to join her for a briefing and tour at Union Rescue Mission. URM is the only shelter in skid row that serves families. For the past several months families have arrived at URM seeking assistance, stretching URM’s capacity to its limits.

The Mayor committed to keep this issue at the forefront of her Office of Immigrant Affairs. The BID has witnessed outreach teams visiting with the families. Several families have been taken to temporary housing after our call to Mayor Bass.
